Lessons from Noah’s Obedience

Scripture: NKJV – Genesis 6 v 13 -15, 18
When God told Noah to build an ark, it wasn’t exactly a quick 5 minute crafts project. It was a massive, time-consuming, undertaking that ,if we are being honest… was probably a bit humiliating and laughable to everyone who saw it. Imagine trying to explain to your neighbors and friends, “Yes, I’m building a giant boat in my backyard because God said a flood is coming.” The world had never seen a flood before so the word flood in itself would have been unusual and would have led to many more questions like ‘What do you mean by flood? Water that fills the earth? This is impossible, this can’t be true…etc”

But see that’s the thing, obedience doesn’t always look glamorous , sometimes it looks confusing, lonely, or even foolish. Trust me I’ve been there. Yet Noah pressed on, day after day, brick by brick, plank by plank. His story reminds us that obedience to God isn’t about convenience…it’s about trust.

Scripture: NKJV – Genesis 6 v 18
Obedience often doesn’t make sense at first. God may ask us to take a step that feels uncomfortable or requires us to go against the current of culture. Just like Noah, we may find ourselves wondering if people think we’ve lost it. But having faith isn’t about fitting in, it’s about leaning on and listening to God’s voice even when others don’t understand.

Obedience also takes time. The ark wasn’t built in a week. It was a long, steady process of showing up, following God’s direct instructions, and not giving up when it felt repetitive or exhausting. Our own obedience often looks the same. Whether it’s being faithful in prayer, pursuing purity, showing integrity at work, or choosing forgiveness daily, it’s rarely a one time act. It’s a lifestyle, built slowly, steadily and brick by brick.

Practical Steps:

  • What does brick by brick mean in a practical sense?
  • What first step will you take today?
  • How will you be obedient?

Scripture: NKJV – Genesis 6 v 22
You see, here’s the beauty of Noah’s story: His obedience didn’t just affect him. It saved his family. Our obedience too, often carries blessings far beyond ourselves. When we walk faithfully with God, our choices ripple outward to our loved ones, our communities, and even generations yet to come after us.

Noah’s ark wasn’t just a boat, it was a testimony. A declaration that God’s word is true, that His promises can be trusted, and that His plans are always worth our obedience. May you have the same courage to build your “ark” whatever it may be – starting that project, building that business, giving that speech. God is asking you today, to trust the process; that brick by brick, He is working out something far greater than we can see.

Reflective Question

What bricks or tools has God given you to build today? What area is God asking for you to stand out in?
